Polish teenager becomes lowest-ranked woman to win Roland Garros

Swiatek fought back from the brink of defeat to outlast Osaka in the final

Iga Świątek won her third French Open title in four years with a 6-2 5-7 6-4 victory against the unseeded Karolína Muchová in the women's final on Saturday.

The world number one fought back from the brink of defeat to outlast Naomi Osaka 7-6 7-1 1-6 7-5 in a thrilling semi-final on Thursday.

And the 20-year-old Pole showed great resilience once again in the final, coming from a break down in the third set to win the match.

Swiatek is now the lowest-ranked woman to win the French Open since Jelena Ostapenko in 2017.

The victory extends her winning streak to 35 matches, the longest on the WTA Tour since Venus Williams won 35 in a row in 2000.

Swiatek is now the clear favorite to win Wimbledon next month, where she will be aiming to become the first woman to win three Grand Slams in a row since Serena Williams in 2015.
